Tired of Scrubbing Cooking Splatters off the Wall?

Same here! Our kitchen wall above the cooker was constantly getting messy and where the landlord had only painted in normal cheap white matt emulsions this was not easy to clean. We searched high and low for a renter-friendly solution that was pretty and budget friendly.

Enter: Peel and stick wallpaper from Temu and some clever trim from Amazon.

Renter-friendly peel and stick backsplash

The Problem

Every time we cooled, the wall behind the hob took a hit – oil splashes, steam stains, and general grime. Seems my landlord has painted the whole kitchen in basic matte white paint. It was functional chaos, but not in a cute way! I’d looked around at glass splashbacks. They cost over £80 for just plain glass. Then, I’d have to drill holes to fix it up to the wall. I would also need to fill the holes when I left. We needed a renter-friendly kitchen backsplash idea that was:

  • Easy to install
  • Budget-friendly
  • Bold and beautiful
  • Removable if/when we move out

The Solution: Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Budget Kitchen Makeover

I found a retro floral peel and stick wallpaper on Temu. It felt so Kiki’s House. Think pale pink petals, orange stems, and playful blue centers. It instantly added personality to the space while protecting the wall.

Installation Tips:

  • Getting the first panel straight was a bit of a pickle. Once that was sorted, the rest went on like a dream.
  • A sharp Stanley knife made trimming the top and bottom super easy.
  • The wallpaper adhered well to our clean dry wall – no bubbles, no drama.

Tools I used:

  • A long ruler – I have one with a spirit level on which makes getting a straight line super easy.
  • A sharp Stanley knife. Stanley are safety knives that retract when not in use, safer than a scalpel.
  • A Credit/Bank card – It is super handy for making sure there are no bubbles. It also helps in getting a nice clean edge at the top and bottom.
  • A pair of sharp scissors to cut the wallpaper.

The Finishing Touch: Peel and Stick Trim

DIY Backsplash for renters

To give the splashback a polished, built in look, we added self-adhesive half-round trim from Amazon.

It frames the wallpaper beautifully and hides any slightly wobbly edges (because let’s be honest, DIY isn’t always perfect – and that’s okay!)

Why we love it:

  • It’s flexible and easy to cut
  • No nails or glue needed
  • Matte white finish keeps things crisp and clean.

Removable Backsplash Ideas

This renter-friendly kitchen update took less than 45 minutes and cost under £20. It’s proof that you don’t need tiles or power tools to create a functional, fabulous splashback. If you’re in a rental, this idea is ideal. It also works if you just want a low-commitment upgrade. This renter-friendly kitchen splashback idea using peel and stick wallpaper with trim is a game-changer.
